Mobility Scooters Hull

Buying a mobility scooter is a big decision, and it’s a much easier one when you can see the scooter in front of you and talk to someone who isn’t in a rush. We’re IAP Mobility, a family-run showroom on Cleveland Street in Hull, and mobility scooters are what we’re best known for. We sell both brand-new scooters and carefully reconditioned ones, so there’s usually a good option whatever your budget.

The real advantage of buying your mobility scooter in Hull, rather than clicking “add to basket” on a website, is that you can try before you buy. You can sit on it, feel how it steers, check you can get on and off comfortably and be sure it’s the right size for where you’ll actually use it. Come in, take your time, and we’ll help you get it right.

Types of mobility scooter

Mobility scooters come in a few broad shapes, and the right one depends far more on how you’ll use it than on which looks best in the brochure. Here’s the plain-English version:

If you’re not sure which of those fits, that’s exactly what we’re here for — tell us where you want to go and we’ll point you at the ones that suit and leave out the ones that don’t.

New and reconditioned mobility scooters in Hull

Not everyone wants, or needs, a brand-new scooter, which is why we always keep a choice of reconditioned models on the floor alongside the new ones. If you’re looking for used mobility scooters in Hull, a reconditioned scooter is a sensible way to get a quality machine for less.

Every reconditioned mobility scooter we sell is checked over and prepared by us before it goes out on the showroom floor — so you get the lower price without the worry of buying something unseen from a stranger online. If you’d like to know exactly what’s covered on a particular reconditioned scooter, just ask us in the showroom and we’ll talk you through it.

Choosing the right scooter

There’s no single “best” mobility scooter, only the one that’s best for you. A handful of questions usually points to the answer:

Try before you buy at our Hull showroom

You wouldn’t buy shoes without trying them on, and a mobility scooter is a far bigger commitment. The best way to choose is to come to our Hull showroom, try a few scooters properly and see how they feel. Pop in during opening hours — no appointment needed — or give us a call first if you’d like us to have a particular model ready for you.

Mobility scooter FAQs

What’s the difference between a pavement scooter and a road scooter?
In simple terms, class 2 “pavement” scooters have a maximum speed of 4mph and are designed for footpaths and getting around the shops. Class 3 “road” scooters can do up to 8mph on the road, can be used on the road as well as the pavement, and tend to be larger with lights and indicators — though on the pavement they too are limited to 4mph. If you tell us where and how far you want to travel, we’ll help you pick the right class.

Do I need to register or insure a mobility scooter?
It depends on the class. Class 2 pavement scooters don’t need to be registered. Class 3 road scooters do have to be registered with the DVLA — but it’s free: they count as “invalid carriages”, so there’s no registration fee and no road tax to pay. There’s no legal requirement to insure a class 2 or class 3 scooter, but we’d always recommend it — and we’re happy to talk you through what applies to the model you’re interested in.

What’s the difference between a new and a reconditioned scooter?
A new scooter is exactly that — unused, in the latest specification. A reconditioned scooter is a pre-owned machine that we’ve checked over and prepared for sale, which is why it costs less. Both are worth a look: it often comes down to your budget and the features you want, and we’ll happily compare a new and a reconditioned model side by side in the showroom.

How far can a mobility scooter go on a single charge?
It varies. The range depends on the model, the size and condition of the battery, and the terrain — hills, kerbs and rougher ground all use more power than a flat pavement. Rather than quote a single figure, we’d rather understand the trips you make and recommend a scooter with comfortable range to spare.
